Week 6 Prompt: Promoting a Genre
I think a fun way to promote any genre at the library is to have a display
where the books are wrapped like presents, encouraging people to select a book
they might not normally pick up. For romance, we could make the display around
Valentine’s day and call it something like “unwrap your book valentine” or
something. The kicker is that if they decide to participate, they only get to
unwrap one book, and they must check the book out. We could put stickers on the
books that say “Romance + ___” (whatever main subgenre they might be). For
people who decide to participate in the game, we could hold a raffle where the
winner would get a free romance book to keep on Valentine’s day. To select the
books, we could have staff pick out some of their favorite romance novels, and
try to have a variety of subgenres – like some rom/com, rom/fantasy,
rom/gentle, etc. To add to the game, we could have the patron review the book
they read in order to be eligible for the raffle. Then again, that might feel a
little too much like homework! ;)
I like the idea of having them write a review to be entered to win a prize. You might not get a ton of entries but I think it would be worth it! Full points!
